GitHub Universe 2024

This past week, ThinkCyber had the incredible opportunity to attend the 10th anniversary of GitHub Universe 2024 in San Francisco, where over 3,000 attendees gathered to celebrate innovation and collaboration in the tech community. We were thrilled to be invited to connect with the GitHub Education team in person, who is our partner in hosting the CyberWeek 2025, as well as engage with different companies, professionals and a diverse group of students from around the world, all passionate about engineering, security, and solving challenging problems.

A standout moment at the event was the keynote address by GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke. He discussed how GitHub is integrating AI-native experiences across the platform. We were particularly excited to hear about new integrations with VS Code and Visual Studio, which will include multi-file editing and personalized Copilot Chat responses. In addition, he upcoming general availability of Copilot Extensions in early 2025 will empower developers to ask questions across their favorite tools and create their own private extensions.

Dohmke also introduced GitHub Models, which expand capabilities for developers to experiment with various AI models as well as GitHub Spark, the AI-native tool designed to help users build apps using natural language. These innovations were showcased through live demos over the two days, and it was inspiring to witness the cutting-edge developments GitHub is bringing to the AI era.

Additionally, we attended a great discussion hosted by Joseph Katsioloudes and Kasia Sitkiewicz on “Navigating Code Security in the Age of AI.” This session provided valuable insights from professionals on how they incorporate AI into their daily work, the transformative impact it has had on their jobs, and their visions for the future of programming with AI. Joseph Katsioloudes is the main developer of the Secure Code Game, which will be one of our main workshops during Cyber Week in February 2025 and we are so grateful for the continues support that Joseph has given to our ThinkCyber team.

During the event, we also discussed our upcoming collaboration with GitHub to host the first Cyber Week in Washington State. This initiative aims to empower students with the skills and mindset needed to navigate their careers in cybersecurity. Meeting the GitHub Education team was a highlight for us, as we exchanged ideas on creating impactful learning experiences that resonate with the next generation of tech leaders.

The enthusiasm of the students we met was truly inspiring. Their dedication to tackling real-world challenges and their innovative spirit remind us that we are in the presence of the future of technology. As ThinkCyber, we are excited to work alongside such talented individuals, teaching them the security mindset essential for their careers.

We are incredibly grateful to GitHub, our main partner in bringing the first Cyber Week to life. Their support for this cause is invaluable, and we cannot wait to welcome everyone to Cyber Week in February 2025!

Thank you to everyone at GitHub Universe for the warm welcome and for the inspiring conversations. We look forward to our collaboration and can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Stay tuned for more updates on Cyber Week and other initiatives as we continue our mission to empower the next generation of tech talent!
